John Martyn – RIP

by NobblySan

I know that Duncan is a fan, so he’ll doubtless be saddened to hear that John Martyn, maverick singer, songwriter, and all round ‘good bloke’ has died in hospital in Ireland.

I’m not a huge fan of Martyn myself (it’s just not my sort of stuff), but am saddened to hear of the loss of one of the true characters in the music business. They are getting to be few and far between, with all the ‘manufactured’ sameness that is so prevalent in popular music these days.

RIP Mr Martyn, RIP.

  1. Oh go on … fix it … you know you want to …. (before Nosey spots it)

  2. Hope you don’t mind me adding a vid of the man to your post, Nobbly !

  3. ‘Twas what I was expecting.

  4. Glad I didn’t disappoint then

  5. I’m to pilot to point at others miss takes..

  6. I am very, very sorry to hear John Martyn has died. I just found my ‘One World’ cassette (last seen in late 80′s) a couple of months ago and it was still a good listen. RIP JM.

  7. ‘cassette’, ‘cassette’…hmmm that sounds familiar.

I have a vague recollection of such things from years long gone by; pre-industrial revolution, I think.

I’m sure I’ve got a few cases of them up in the loft. Were they the little squarish plasticcy things with wheels in and some annoying brown tape, the only purpose of which, was to get wrapped round the machinery in your MP3 cassette player?

  8. That’s right. And guess where I found it? Under a pile of Betamax and Phillips VCR brickwork. What’s more, I have a car with a cassette player in it too!

  9. By jove missus! Betamax, eh?

You’ll be telling me you’ve got an 8-track stereo in your car as well as the cassette player next.

  10. Cassette player?

    Bloody youngsters!

I spent much of my teenage years with a microphone rammed up against my ‘tranny’ – illegally copying stuff from Radio Caroline on to a ‘reel to reel’ tape recorder

  11. haven’t got him on my ipod – soz ;)

  12. Duncan, you had a “tranny?”

    Well, slap my thigh!

I had you down as a family man.

  13. thought it was time I made a clean breast of things, Ratty

    [21:03 Brummie time]

  14. You mean a clean “moob” don’t you Duncan?

By the way, who was the “munt” who came up with that expression?

    (Janvier, Casa time)
