What Price Democracy?

by duncanr

In the run-up to Elections in Afghanistan, British and American forces launched a major operation to clear the Taliban from Helmand province – thus allowing a potential 80,000 people the opportunity to participate in the election.

wardead-400The cost (so far) for British forces, in terms of number of individuals killed or injured is – 37 dead, 150 injured.

According to figures published in ‘The Telegraph’ newspaper only 150 people of that potential 80,000 turned out to vote.

37 dead, 150 injured = 150 votes

A price worth paying ?

  1. That is so awful I’m too stunned to wisearse back.

I hope Bliar and Brune (etal) sleep well!

  2. The arrogance and stupidity of Western governments never cease to amaze me.

Afghanistan is a country that has never had what we refer to as democracy; it a completely alien concept to the vast majority of the people.

Once outside the capital, most people have allegiance only to their local tribe, adn take leadership from the tribal elders, or warlords (call them what you will). The fact that a multi-national force of strangely dressed troops, all armed to the teeth and drivng around their country in heavy armour are telling them to change the habits and customs of generations does not go down at all well.

The thing is – if a mechanical engineer sitting in a village near Oldham in the North of England can see this; why can’t the politicians?
