Church goes to the Dogs

When the Rev. Tom Eggebeen took over at Covenant Presbyterian Church in L.A. three years ago, the church was in decline. Most of the congregation were in their 60’s and attendance was falling. In short, the church was going to the dogs!

Something had to be done.

dog200Having pawsed to consider the matter, the Rev Eggebeen decided to invite dog owners to a special service to which they could bring their pets.

The 1st Canine Communion service saw around 30 dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages pile into the church with their human companions – around 3/4 of which were new faces. (the humans, not the dogs!!!)

Comfy dog beds were available for the canine congregation, as well as water dishes, and offerings of tasty biscuits.

(the humans weren’t so lucky)

Special prayers were offered to the Lord for his help in healing Mr Boobie’s knees and for Hunter, who’d had a stroke. Then the names of beloved pets past and present were called out before launching into the Lord’s Prayer.

Afterwards, many of those attending Church for the 1st time said they intended returning so in terms of recruitment the idea was a success.
