Normally, whenever there’s a mid-term by-election, and the government party gets a good kicking, the spin doctors are very quick to distance the defeat from government policies – claiming that it’s mid-term blues, or disatisfaction based on ignorance amongst the proles.
What’s so different here then chaps? How come this one doesn’t fit neatly into that same model?
Any road up… if you look at the numbers involved :-
— Labour win with 59.39% of the vote.
— An abysmal, all-time record low turnout of 32.97% of the electorate.
You get the startling number of 19.58% of voters in a traditional labour stronghold voting to show their firm belief in government policies.
