Student Rom Houben was left totally paralysed. after a car crash 23 years ago.
All that time since, he has been in hospital, where doctors and relatives believed him to be in a coma
Unable to move any muscles to indicate to anyone that he was conscious (Jeez, how frustrating would that be !!!) he was able to hear every word said in his presence – how many relatives, I wonder, are now casting their minds back trying to remember if they said anything indiscreet or unflattering in his presence?
Mr Houben’s ordeal came to an end when modern technologies caught up with him and a new, more sophisticated test showed his brain was active, working as ‘normal’. He can never leave hospital but at least, thanks to a computer he can now reach out to the world
