  5. I spy with my little eye, a bored insomniac…

      • I wondered if you would see this!

Assuming the science is accurate and that the results translate from mice to humans…
(I’ll pause there for a quick digression. Not many folk know that if penicillin had been subjected to modern drug safety and toxicity studies it would never have been approved for human use as it causes a nasty fatal bleeding in guineapigs. And I’ve lost count of the number of prescrition drugs suddenly withdrawn after more widespread licensed use than needed for approval found intolerable side-effects. Back to theme)…

then the findings will raise 2 obvious issues. Firstly, will opiates remain prescribed for otherwise untreatable terminal pain when the alternatives are pretty limited. Secondly, how long and what cost to develop a newtype of drug to utilize this mu-receptor.

The average time for such a new drug from drawing board to pill bottle in local chemist is about 5 years. I’m sure one of the drug companies will consider the financial investment and then charge a fecking fortune for the product.

A more fundamental issue for me is the quality of life in terminal care not the duration of life with suffering. With careful planning by specialist nurses, it should be rare for anyone in UK to die in pain of cancer. And if a regime of medication gives the sufferer good quality in their dying days, should they be expected to soldier in severe pain for the sake of a few days? I do not think so, but I would be very interested in your and MrsD thoughts as you are right in there with this.

        Sorry, long answer, dave
