It’s the timing of these self-flagellation sessions as much as anything else that will lead to a few questioning eyebrows being raised. That the late Pope particularly felt the need to chastise his body prior to ordaining young men as priests will no doubt cause some to wonder just what sins of the flesh/mind troubled him so at these times that he felt the need to punish himself for harbouring them.
