WHY wont youngsters learn?

by Julie

Let me apologise in advance for this post … but I sincerely hope that some youngster will read it, and think twice!  I just have to vent my anger over this somewhere!  I’ve been pondering the entire weekend over whether I should put this up in The MadHatters, and I’ve decided that I’m going to.  (Duncs, Nobbles … if either of you feel I’m going over the top here – please remove the post – I will not take offence!).

Most of you who are regulars here know that I’ve had my fair share of heartache this year (I think this has been one of the worst years I’ve ever had to go through) – a couple of weeks ago I said I couldn’t wait for the year to end as I just couldn’t take any more … there were only a couple more weeks to go, and I thought it would be smooth sailing into 2010 from there on in.

Sadly, I was so very wrong!

This is Jessica (or Jessie as I call her).  Jessie is my best friend Dawn’s niece.  We buried Dawn’s mom (my 2nd mom) four weeks ago.  I used to change Jessie’s nappies when she was a tiny little baby.

This photo was taken four months ago, at a braai at Dawn’s house.

Read on ….

On Friday afternoon, Jessie’s work had their annual Christmas function.  They ran out of colddrink (to mix with the alcohol), and so Jessie jumped on the back of a motorbike WITHOUT A HELMET ON!  Yeah, sure they were only going to the shop around the corner ….. what the hell could go wrong?

They never made it to the shop …. an elderly lady in her car skipped a stop sign, they hit her …. and this is Jessie as of this morning :

This is the best side of her face, it looks good compared to the other side – she has lost all her front teeth and is in incredible pain.  They cannot even move her to try and wipe her down.  She is living in the past at the moment, believes she is still in school, and is visiting Oupa and Ouma (who was the dear lady we buried not too long ago).  They have no idea yet as to the full extent of her injuries as the minute they try to push her into the scan machine she becomes absolutely hysterical.

Jessie is only 22, she has two small babies that are wondering where their mother is – we don’t even know yet if they will get their mother back!

So to any youngster (or anyone) reading this ….. THINK before you do something stupid – it can change your life forever – and cause absolutely unbearable pain and heartache for those who love you!

DON’T DRIVE DRUNK, AND DON’T RIDE ON A MOTORBIKE WITHOUT A HELMENT!

  1. Julie. I think you are excused the rest of 2009 and all of 2010. The message is vital, but will be ignored, I’m sad to say. Life Sucks!

  2. Sorry to hear about your friend, Jules. Hopefully her injuries look worse than they are and she will in time make a good recovery.

  3. I know we’ve all had a few friends die from either alcohol and/or motorcycles… I have… I’m glad to hear that she is still alive… She has a very good chance at recovery, from what you have described… As the swelling goes down and she gets a new set of (2?) front teeth for Christmas. Maybe she can help others to avoid the bad decision that she almost killed her…

best wishes to your friend Julie…

  4. Wotcher Julie.

Of course you’re not going OTT with this post. Letting us know how you feel by posting here, is as good a way of relieving your tension as any.

I suspect that it won’t happen too often, but I’m in agreement with the God of Cats on this one (only joking, Frank!…before you go get your gun.)- Jessie will recover, and if she can learn a lesson and teach others, then all well and good.

We’ve all done daft things in our youth (and beyond!), but it’s only when your luck runs out that they show their serious side. A school friend of mine killed himself through arsing about at high speed on a motorbike; if he hadn’t hit a concrete bus stop, it would just have been a bit of a lark instead of a full-blown tragedy. Like I said – a matter of luck.

    I wish Jessie well.

  5. so sorry about your friend (and your bad year). I’ll light a candle for her xx

  6. Julie,
Of course you get to rant and mourn and vent.. and admonish. I’m so sorry for the difficult times, and for this new tragedy.
Kids seem to think they’re invincible, scary and such a waste.

    Thanks,
    DF

  7. Sorry to read about this. Poor thing, I hope she’s strong enough to recover in full, physically and mentally.

It’s good to learn that Jessie has people like you who clearly care for her from the bottom of their heart.

Wish there was a way I could help.

  8. Yes Julie, truly sad. I really, really hope she will be OK and I really, really, REALLY, hope next year is so much better for you.
I know we joke a lot about drinking but it is so important to be responsible. It’s not only your life you are risking but lives of innocent others :(

      • Blahahahaa :) Hey Cat God Frank, you reckon I should use a blow torch? This friggin ice is a bitch! I am beginning to wonder if the Scotch is worth it?

        • A blow torch, you carried a blowtorch across the Antarctica?

Hell no don’t use a blow torch… The shit might blowup and then who’s going to run your blog- damn it. Lynn’s already bailed on us so we have to be vewy vewy cawful(Elmer) to keep you alive and well in the name of the blogoshere. So I recommend we hire some Eskimos to get it out for us? :)

  9. Hi Julie
What an awful thing to happen. Hope Jessie will be OK.
I’ve shown this to the teens in the family; we’re all sending big hugs.

  10. Thank you everyone for your comments – I truly appreciate them.

One of the ladies that works in one of our branches happened to mention to me this morning that her youngster had gone quad biking on Saturday and had flipped his quad. Luckily he was not hurt because he did have a helmet on. BUT .. they’d apparently had one hell of an argument shortly before because he wanted to go riding without the helmet ….. thank goodness she threatened to take the keys away if he didn’t put it on. She asked me to mail her the photos of Jessie so that she can show him exactly what can happen!

Still no good news on Jessie’s condition though.

    • Julie,

We have the same issues with kids and horses. It’s a hell of along way to fall from a horse, and they can cave your skull in with a single kick even when you’re not riding them. Hats are an absolute must.

But of course, the kids at the stables know better…..

  11. Thoughts go out to you, Jessie and her family.
