Blog power!

Up thine - fraudsters!

Does anyone remember this post from a couple of months ago?

It concerns a company flogging bomb detection devices that are basically, well…. bollocks.

Attempts to expose this bunch of fraudsters began ages ago, by people like Techowiz, through sites such as The Ministry of Truth, amongst others. Bruce Hood picked up on the story, and pursued it with the owner of the company flogging the dubious devices, who offered him the chance to visit him for a demonstration.

Things seemed to be stalled, until the BBC got involved, and the blog-led campaign gained serious credibility and backup. Soon after this, Avon and Somerset plod started showing some interest, and Jim McCormick, the owner of ATSC Ltd. (proud manufacturers and inventers of the ADE651) was arrested on suspicion of fraud.

It’s all on ‘Newsnight’ tonight folks, but I’ll let TV megastar Bruce Hood explain further.

  1. As I have just commented on Bruce’s blog, score one, and a damn big one at that, for honest blogging…

  2. It’s about time. This was a bloody obvious scam.

  3. I missed Newsnight, but will catch it on the BBc iPlayer later.

For those unable to watch it, here’s a clip from the BBc website:-

  4. I did watch it, horrifying tale and Bruce came across brilliantly. If you can watch the clip, but BBCiplayer can be a bit iffy in the colonies I understand.

  5. Thanks guys… but our work is not done yet. This is the power of the blogosphere.

  6. I just watched the beeb article; excellent stuff.

But an arrest and bail is one thing – what’s needed now is a conviction and sensible sentencing. Lives have been lost and livelihoods ruined here.

Maybe a traditional trial by jury should be replaced by a test of Jim’s faith in his ‘technology’….

I say he gets stuck in the middle of a minefield, with an ADE651 and a topshop security explosives recognition card programmed for “Achtung! Minen”.

If he gets out to safety then the device is a good ‘un and he’s innocent. But if there’s a loud bang and bits of Jim scattered liberally around; then oops… he was wrong about it.

  7. I seem to remember an old professor of mine at college getting nicked for fraudulent bomb-detecting equipment. Some scams never go out of style.
