American Attitudes towards Muslims

by duncanr

When one looks at the history of human misery and suffering caused by Christians, it seems ironic that there are christians in the UK and the USA (and elsewhere) prepared to treat their fellow citizens with fear and hatred because they happen to be muslim – as were the 9/11 terrorists. One might as well discriminate against Christians everywhere because of past atrocities committed by those who shared the same faith. Yet since the 9/11 attack on the twin towers, the word Muslim and Terrorists have become interchangeable in many people’s minds

Viewed from this side of the Atlantic it would appear that . . .

antipathy towards fellow americans just because they are muslims has grown stronger since 9/11 – witness the furore over the proposed building of a ‘prayer room’ in a Muslim Community centre near Ground Zero.

About a year ago I posted a video portraying the result of a ‘social experiment’ in the USA – a storekeeper was abusive to a Muslim woman (they were both actors) and the reactions of those witnessing the exchange was recorded’

Heartingly, twice as many bystanders spoke up in support of the muslim woman compared to those who sided with the shopkeeper. Somewhat worryingly, however, the majority of witnesses to the exchange did and said nothing – perhaps thereby giving tacit approval to the shopkeeper’s discriminatory behaviour towards the Muslim lady ?

[Although this social experiment was carried out in the USA, I suspect the results would be pretty much the same if it was repeated in the UK !!!]

What,I wonder would be the result if this same experiment were to be repeated now ?

Would there be more or less bystanders stepping forward to support fellow american – albeit one readily identifiable as a muslim?

  1. Sadly the customer could have been a white woman and people tend not to get involved in controversial things. But damn it was sad how many supported the clerk.

  2. i’ve got tears in my eyes. how shameful and ignorant people can be.

  3. lol not necessarily that im defending but you, as a brit, is one to talk haha HELLO AMerica, Canada, Australia all these countries accused of being racist came from YOUR people hhaha

its really its your fault in the end.

Ps id also like to play devils advocate and pose the question whether if you were in their country trying to change their laws and customs if they would be as accommodating to your “freedoms and human rights”?

    • I think those countries you mention, Susi are populated by more than just ex-pats from the UK

Anyway, I wasn’t simply attacking US attitudes to Muslim. The Vid showed more people defending the muslim lady than those siding with the shopkeeper – that is something to take cheer from. Though the large number who did nothing is a worry. And like I said, I’m pretty sure one would see similar results if the experiment was carried out in the UK.

One of the things I find curious since 9/11 is that the media has presented a view of islam based on the views/interpretation of some radical clerics/extremists. There are plenty of small extremist christian groups but no one pretends that their views represent those of the majority of christians !!!
