I caught some of the olympic swimming a few nights ago, and although not particularly interested in the sport, was fascinated by the results achieved by a couple of young American swimmers.
Missy Franklin (aged 17) and Katie Ledecky (even younger at 15) absolutely annihilated the opposition in their two finals.
It’s a sad reflection on the state of world sport today, that because these two dedicated young ladies are American (although the same would count of they were British, Australian, or whatever…) they are rightly hailed as worthy winners; whereas had they been Chinese, they would doubtless have been condemned by the media and hence the public, as drug-fuelled cheats.
Bearman summed it up perfectly, here.
