Something fo the Weekend – No 20

by The Madhatters

Great song and great voice

Pure class the way she lets the story unfold slowly amidst mundane conversation at the dinner table then, having pulled the listener in, leaves them wondering what did they throw off the bridge – and why did Billy Joe jump?

  1. A perfect blend of West and Middle East.

    A bit like me, I suppose — A Desert Rose !

    *cough*

  2. Can’t wait for what Nobbly, with his “Iechyd da’s” and “Isn’t it’s,” has lined up for us on his return from Zombieland Wales.

    Probably a Zombie Welsh Choir.

    Isn’t it, boyo ?

  3. Anyone else notice that Duncan omitted the name of the bridge in his glowing assessment of Bobby Gentry’s rendition of “Ode to Billy Joe?”

I’m talking about the “Tallahatchie” bridge.

Could it be that he had a problem with the spelling ?

    Nah !

  4. I was seven when this came out, and half-remembered it, not knowing who sang it until I was in my 30s or 40s, when I heard it on the radio for the first time since then. It took me back, and I think it’s a beautiful song. I haven’t checked, but I suspect that Doris Day did a version.

  5. I haven’t played this album for years, but I’m sure this is a different version/mix to mine. I will have to pull it out and have a listen.

  6. Er, I haven’t played this album for years, but I’m sure this is a different version/mix to mine. I will have to pull it out and have a listen.

  7. Ah, Doris Day.

I loved this number. If I remember correctly, it was also the theme song for Radio Caroline.

  8. Written by Strummer and Jones.

  9. Don’t know what the connection to the pics is, other than that Johnny is the name of brando’s character in The Wild one.

  10. Well, the weekend’s nearly gone….
