Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo has been Mayor of Marinaleda, a small town near Seville in southern Spain, for 33 years and provided they don’t imprison him he is likely to remain mayor for many more years to come
The 53 yr old communist has his own solution to the economic hardship affecting many of the town’s residents – he has organised raids on local supermarkets, filling trolleys with essentials like milk, bread, soup, tea, coffee etc then leaving without paying and distributing the stolen ‘liberated’ foodstuffs to local soup kitchens for distribution to the poor.
This is a move which has made him very popular with the townsfolk – less so with the supermarket owners
