Oh dear, for those who don’t know, I live in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham.
In 1979, the West Midlands Christian Football league was set up to promote the Christian values of love, peace and understanding through sport. Fixtures are played on a Saturday so players remain free to attend church on the Sunday
When Common Ground United (from Perry Barr) and Zion Athletic (from West Bromwich) played each last week end, however, those . . . Christian values of love, peace and understanding were not much in evidence as ‘all hell broke loose’ when Zion were awarded a disputed penalty. Words were exchanged, then fists, then feet. By the time the brawl was brought to an end and the game abandoned, 5 of the Perry Barr team were charged with ‘unchristian-like’ behaviour
Team managers blamed the violent conduct on the influx of ‘non-christian’ players into the teams (damn atheists and muslims – like christians have never been guilty of violent behaviour towards others)
