He must be White – no Black, Brown, or Yellow Popes, please !
He must be . . . European (or North American at a pinch) but definitely NOT central or south american (too left-wing in their views) NOR African, either (too right wing)
There will be 5 or 6 initial candidates seeking appointment as the new Pope – Each of whom will have their own group of supporters.
There will be tactical voting. If calculations suggest their own candidate will not have enough support to obtain the necessary 2/3 majority of votes cast, cardinals will seek formal/informal alliances (temporary) with other candidates – voting in such a way as to prevent the most popular candidate (unless it’s their own) from obtaining the majority needed to become Pope
It is important to remember that Cardinals are voting with their own selfish interests in mind
The last thing any Cardinal wants to do is elect as Pope a young healthy whippersnapper who would occupy the postion for donkey’s years thereby effectively ruling out any future opportunity for themselves to become Pope before they die.
No, what they are looking for is an auld codger with a dicky heart or some other medical condition that will carry them off after just a few years in the job and thus give ambitious cardinals another opportunity to try themselves for the position of Pope
The only Cardinals who might vote for a young, vigorous candidate will be youngish Cardinals taking the long view – who hope a relatively young Pope in good health will occupy the position long enough that most of their elderly rivals will have shuffled off this mortal coil by the time the new Pope is ready to meet his Maker and that they, themselves, will not be too old when that time comes to make one last grab for the prize

You thought cardinals elected as Pope the man most thought to embody in his person the characteristics of a deeply religious, moral, christian believer?
