A course of chemotherapy was started but, weeks later, the family were told the grim news that his only hope of life was a bone marrow transplant.
Sadly, no family members were a match and so the search for a suitable donor was widened.
None were found in his native Ireland but . . . eventually a perfect match was found in the USA.
Just over 8 weeks ago, a young american woman donated her bone marrow cells to give the hope of life to a stranger.
The lad is still in hospital but his chances of survival are immeasurably better now thanks to this anonymous american woman
