Aussie Soldiers Behaving Badly in Afghanistan

by duncanr

During the 1st World War ,groups of British and German soldiers observed an unofficial truce on Xmas Day – singing carols to each other, then tentatively stepping out into no-man’s land between the opposing trenches to share fags, drink, view photos of each others loved ones at home, then play a friendly game of football.

Post Xmas Day, troops that had fraternised with the enemy were . . .

Give ‘Sticky’ a New Life

by duncanr

‘Sticky’ is a 6 month old kitten rescued by UK soldiers serving in Afghanistan. She and her brother were found, barely alive, after being beaten by local kids. Sadly, her brother subsequently died, bur Sticky is doing well

The lads have been arranging for cat food, worming tablets, and flea tablets to be sent out from the UK. Their tour of duty will soon be up, however, and . . .

Lucky Escape for British Troops

by duncanr

Spending Christmas in Afghanistan rather than at home with their loved ones is bad enough. Being ‘entertained’ by whiny-voiced ‘singer/songwriter’ James Blunt is like rubbing salt in the wound.

Fortunately for British troops, their prayers were answered – a serious of ‘hiccups’ left the RAF flight carrying Blunt ‘grounded’ at East Midlands airport for 15 hours.

Wikileaks : Assessing the Damage

by duncanr

The Pentagon is bracing itself for the expected release later this week by Wikileaks of around 500,000 ‘secret’ documents pertaining to the war in Iraq.

This dwarfs the ‘mere’ 70,000 documents relating to the war in Afghanistan leaked by Wikileaks some months ago.

The leak of the Afghanistan dossier was condemned at the time by some commentators/analysts for putting the lives of service men and women, and afghan informants and collaborators at risk . . .

A US Senate report has criticised the growth of private security firms in Afghanistan.

Around 26,000 personnel are estimated to be employed by these firms – 9 out of every 10 paid for by the US Government.

Want a Laugh ?

by duncanr

There’s not a lot to laugh about regarding the situation in Afghanistan

But this story made me smile – illustrating as it does, how the ‘war’ against the Taliban has degenerated into farce.

Normally, I’d put my own slant on it and then direct you to the source but nothing I could say would make this any funnier than it is – so I’ll leave you to read the article for yourself

Armed Forces Day

by duncanr

Today is Armed Forces Day in UK

These are just some of the UK soldiers who have been killed in Afghanistan. They are not just numbers or names. They are real people mourned by their loved ones – brave men who died in a faraway country fighting an un-winnable war started by two of the greatest smug, self-righteous, religious f*cken wankers in history – Bush and Blair !!!

How to (NOT) Make Friends

by duncanr

There are often conflicting claims in a war situation and the truth is hard to ascertain

US ‘Special Forces’ are increasingly employing ‘targeted assassination’ as a tool to combat the Taliban in Afghanistan. Acting on ‘intelligence’ received, helicopters fly in at night – dropping troops to storm buildings and kill the Taliban inside.

Speed is of the essence, else the element of surprise is lost. There is no time to stop and question the inhabitants. It is a case of shoot first lest you be shot yourself. Besides, what’s to question? What if the ‘Taliban’ do look like children? No matter. Kill them anyway. These are the enemy. ‘Intelligence’ has said so. And ‘intelligence’ is never wrong is it?

Or is it?

Like the drone attacks which have resulted in the deaths of so many civilians (‘Collateral damage’), targeted assassinations that kill the wrong people do not harm the Taliban but serve only to increase the antipathy of Afghan citizens towards the Americans and the Kabul Government – in effect driving more and more folk to join the ranks of the Taliban
