Women in India (like those in many other parts of the world) get a raw deal when compared to men.
Daughters are less ‘valued’ than sons in many families. This is not to say that parents love their daughters any less than they love their sons. But from an economic standpoint, sons bring income into the household and, when they marry, another woman into the house to help with the chores.
For many parents then, sons are seen as a kind of private pension plan – the expectation being that their sons will look after them in their old age.
It may have seemed like a good (if novel) solution at the time to a tricky problem – marry both the girl he loves and also the girl picked out for him by his parents but . . .
