IRC: US Medics complicit in torture

by duncanr

A Confidential Report by the Red Cross into treatment meted out to 14 people detained by the CIA at secret destinations has been posted on the Web.

The report questions the legality of the detentions, concludes that the treatment of the detainees constitutes ‘torture’ and criticises the role of medical staff, claiming they violated their code of medical ethics by ‘siding’ with the ‘torturers’ rather than making the health and welfare of their ‘patients’ their primary concern.

  1. “During the harshest period of my interrogation I gave a lot of false information in order to satisfy what I believed the interrogators wished to hear in order to make the ill-treatment stop. . . . . . I’m sure that the false information I was forced to invent in order to make the ill-treatment stop wasted a lot of their time and led to several false red alerts being placed in the US”

Exactly what I – and I suspect many others – would do.

If I ever found myself in a similar situation. I would confess to anything they wanted if I thought it would stop my captors torturing me.

Reading the accounts of what the CIA did to these men, I find it hard to find any legal, moral, ethical justification for the way they were treated. Moreover, there must be serious doubts as to the quality/reliability of any ‘confessions’ obtained under these circumstances – which makes it difficult to defend this ‘torture’ in terms of any practical benefit gained.

  2. That’s exactly why civilised countries with a moral and ethical legal system have nothing to do with torture.

Most countries do it – I’m damn sure that the UK did it when dealing with IRA suspects – it’s just that the previous US administration was so arrogant that it thought it could do it with impunity, and then hoodwink the public into going along with it.

Unfortunately, Blair’s insistence on hanging onto the coat tails of Bush and his criminal cronies, has left the UK firmly embedded in the mire of this whole sorry fiasco.
