Fast Lane to Prison

by duncanr

Military vehicles are exempt from paying tolls on China’s roads.

From May 2008 to January 2009, Shi Jianfeng ran a business transporting gravel in two trucks.

Who’s ahead of me here?

Yup, you guessed it – Shi put fake military number plates on his trucks and had his drivers wear fake uniforms to avoid paying any tolls.

It is estimated he avoided paying tolls 2,300 times before being rumbled.

A judge has now sentenced him to life in prison (and a 1 million yuan fine)

Following public protestations about the severity of the sentence,, however, a retrial has been ordered

  1. If that had happened in the US, it wouldn’t come as such a surprise to me. But for it to happen in country renowned for its harsh penalties… I guess harsher conditions breed bolder criminals. 😕

  2. There’s a couple of the criminal sort over here who would benefit greatly from China’s generous justice system!

  3. You would think they would have a special fast pass for military vehicles. But I guess that would be too easy.
