  1. ‘Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band’ in the mid-70s.
Lead singer Mic Conway, his brother Jim on blues harmonica.

The humour in the song is perhaps obscure for Unaustralians.
It immortalises a brief stop at a truckstop cafe (decorated with plastic potted palm trees) in 70s country Australia, at a town called ‘Wangaratta’ often shortened to ‘Wang’.

Mic and Jim went on to form the ‘National Junk Band’ performing an eclectic mixture of jug-band/blues/jazz/swing/cabaret/vaudeville/circus, using home-made/junk/recycled/extraordinary instruments

    There’s a good write-up here

  2. Continuing last week’s theme of albums that I bought years ago – I had a couple by Hawkwind.

The fantastic live double album Space Ritual and the superb Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music, from which this track is taken…..
