A Man and His Dog

by duncanr

John Unger rescued Schoep when he was an 8 month old puppy. They have been inseparable ever since.

Now 19 yr old, Schoep is afflicted with arthritis. Each evening, John carries him down to Lake Superior and lets the warm water ease his aching bones while he drifts off to sleep in his arms

  1. It would have been such a beautiful, tender picture if the story behind it wasn’t so sad. There comes a time when we all have to make that heart-breaking decision to let go ….. simply because we love our furry friends so much! I’ve been there, as have we all, and as hard as that decision is to make, you know you are doing the best you can for a friend that gave you unconditional love, as only an animal can!! I still cry over all my animals that I had to give that “yes” word for, but my selfishness in trying to keep them with me for just a little bit longer because I didn’t want to let go would have been so wrong!

  2. Great Photo I can see why it went virial.

  3. Wow – now every man and his dog wants to comment on this story…

  4. That’s a great photo, but Lake Superior is warm? It’s usually ice cold, even at the end of summer. I guess this must be a shallow bay or something.
