Rimsha Masih Accuser Arrested

by duncanr

Rimsha Masih is a Pakistani Christian.

She is currently being held in prison – accused of blasphemy after allegations she burned pages of the Muslim holy book, the Quran.

Blasphemy is a serious crime in Pakistan, punishable by a long prison sentence or death. That is if the accused is found guilty in a court of law. It is not unknown for those accused of blasphemy to be executed by mobs without any opportunity to answer the allegations against them in court.

It was possibly for her own protection, therefore, that . . .Pakistani police moved so quickly to take the girl into custody when word reached them that a local cleric was stirring public feeling against her.

Rimsha’s arrest has sparked outrage, not just abroad, but within Pakistan itself. The girl is a minor, “mentally challenged”, and can neither read or write. If she had burned pages of the Quran, she would not have known that she was doing so. On the face of it then, the charge of blasphemy must be dismissed, since there could not have been any deliberate intention on her part to desecrate the holy book. Though were the case against her to be dismissed, it would likely not be safe for her and her family to remain in their village lest their muslim neighbours ignore the verdict of the court and kill the girl anyway

The case against the girl, however, has now taken an unexpected twist. The muslim cleric, who was the girl’s main accuser has himself been arrested by Pakistani police on a charge of planting the evidence against the girl.

If anyone is guilty of blasphemy then, it is not the young Christian girl but the muslim cleric who ripped pages of the quran in order to frame her !

Islam or Christianity, makes no difference – the most fervent believers are often the biggest arseholes !
