Christian Couple Lose Appeal to Supreme Court

by duncanr

no gay signI am old enough to remember a time when it was quite common in some parts of the UK to see signs on doors or on windows, or in adverts  placed by landlords looking for tenants to rent a property that said words to the effect of ‘No Irish or Coloureds Need Apply’

Thankfully these days are long gone. We have laws now that make such discrimination illegal

Why do i mention this?

A Christian couple, Peter and Hazel Bull, who . . .run a B&B Guest House refused to let a room to a gay couple

A County Court ruled they had acted illegally in doing so. They appealed this decision to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal endorsed the decision of the lower court. The Bulls then appealed to the Supreme Court. When the 5 Law Lords unanimously rejected their appeal, the Bulls said . . .

Britain ought to be a country of freedom and tolerance, but it seems religious beliefs must play second fiddle to the new orthodoxy of political correctness – (http://tinyurl.com/l2p6g86)

Hhmm, interesting statement ‘freedom and tolerance’. The Bull’s interpretation of ‘freedom and tolerance’ seems a whole lot different from mine. Seems the Bulls want the UK to return to the days when people had the freedom to discriminate against others when offering a service and that the rest of us should ‘tolerate’ their intolerance in so doing.

While calling for a more tolerant society in the UK, the Bull’s seem incapable of recognising the hypocrisy of their position – demanding everyone show tolerance towards them whilst they, themselves, are not prepared to show much tolerance to those whose lifestyle they disapprove of
