Porn or #MeToo story?

by allthoughtswork

Yes, guys, it’s that bad out there. It’s always been that bad out there. Why didn’t women “speak up” before now? Fuck you. We’ve been screaming into a void for generations, nobody gave a shit. They could afford not to give a shit, they had nothing to lose.

It’s only now that the immediacy and ubiquity of social media exposes despicable behavior in real time and tarnishes a brand’s sales that it’s suddenly being deemed “a problem.” But the current witch hunt approach in Congress and Hollywood, which neatly drives the above point home, is deplorable. It does not represent any sort of critical mass in mass consciousness, it’s just governing bodies scraping off potential box office poison before their comfortable position of power is crushed by popular vote.

If society was truly coming to Jesus about sexual harassment, the groundswell would cross genders, races, ages, and tax brackets. So far, I only see wealthy white women with a streak of celebrity running through them being “believed” and only when they point a manicured finger at a dude fairly high up the power ladder. Which makes it pretty clear who can still afford not to give a shit.

When the single black mother of three is believed when she points the finger at her minister, when the gay college freshman is believed when he points the finger at his senior dorm mate, when the assistant manager at McDonald’s, the child in a foster family, the octogenarian in a nursing home, and the surgical resident at a major hospital are not brushed off with a “you must have imagined it, he’s a good guy,” then we’ll really have something.

When #MeToo becomes #BackintheDarkAges, that’s when.
