today Hindus and Sikhs across the world celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Lights – marking the victory of light over dark, good over evil by lighting lamps inside and outside homes, shops, and public spaces, and exchanging food and presents with friends and family

a lot of fireworks going off here last night – and I expect there will be a great more tonight

not some drunken revellers impatient for 5th Nov (bonfire night) to arrive but Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains celebrating Diwali – the Festival of Light . . .

Happy Diwali

diwali how could I forget – what with the fireworks that have been going off around me the past few days ?

but forget I did – for a second or two

I was sat at the kitchen table, radio on in the background

it is permanently tuned to an Asian radio station which comes on air at 6am each morning – till then, during the night, the frequency is shared with another station which broadcasts interesting news and magazine style content

the switchover at 6am is one of the ‘markers’ of my day – if the radio is playing desi music when I return from the park with the dogs, I know I’m running a bit late

Happy Diwali

Today is Diwali, an important date for followers of the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain religions.

Equivalent to our ‘New Year’s Day’, it marks a new beginning, a fresh start.

Also known as the Festival of Light because of the the multitude of lamps that are lit, diwali symbolises the victory of light over dark, the triumph of good over evil.

Origin of Diwali

Today, millions of folk around the world will be lighting candles and fireworks, and houses and temples will be festooned with lights, to celebrate Diwali – the lights symbolising the victory of light over dark, good over evil.
