International Women’s Day

today is set aside to remind us of the shitty deal women have had to endure over the years, when compared to that enjoyed by men

this video highlights the disparity between the rights and privileges enjoyed by men and women in the UK prior to the commencement of the Great War in 1914, and how that changed as a consequence of the war – [mind you, many folk would argue that there is still work to be done to achieve equality of the sexes !]

in 1792, Scotland’s national bard, Rabbie Burns, wrote a poem entitled ‘The Rights of Women’ – the first verse of which said . . .

While Europe’s eye is fix’d on mighty things,
The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;
While quacks of State must each produce his plan,
And even children lisp the Rights of Man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Woman merit some attention.
