US Man’s Cunning Plan

by duncanr

I am of sound mind but not so much sound body – part of a note 59 yr old James Verone sent to the Gaston Gazette advising them he intended to rob a bank of $1 then wait for police to arrive and arrest him

the reason?

unemployed, with little money, health problems, and no medical insurance, he wanted to be put in jail so he would receive free medical care for his ailments

USA : Health Care Kerfuffle

by duncanr

this is painful to watch . . .

the septuagenarian satsuma who currently occupies the White House wants to repeal what he calls ‘obamacare’ and replace it with an alternative health care plan that would allow insurance companies to deny/over charge cover to those with a ‘pre-existing’ condition

[thank f*ck for the National Health Service here in the UK !]

Only in America 2009

by noseycow

We all moan about what’s wrong with the NHS, how much money is wasted, the time it takes to get appointments/treatments, the worry over Hospital acquired infections, hospital food, the cost of parking, the list is endless.

But when you read this story from America, where providing and paying for health care is a business, it makes you realise how lucky we are.

Nataline

Nataline

In 2007, 17 year old Nataline Sarkisyan received a bone marrow transplant, from her brother, to treat her leukemia. This lengthy and costly procedure was paid for by ‘Cigna’ Insurance Group, via her parents employers health care plan.

A complication arose during the procedure and Nataline’s liver failed. She needed an urgent liver transplant, but Cigna refused to pay for it saying that this treatment was ‘experimetal’ . (They never asked the tens of thousands successful liver transplantee’s whether they view it as experimental! ).

A massive media campaign was launched to try and get the company to pay, ending with Nurses and other health care workers demonstrating outside Cigna’s offices. The company faced with a growing media frenzy capitulated and agreed to fund the operation, but an hour later Nataline, who had entered a persistent vegetative state, was taken off  life support and died.

Her family are suing Cigna, who they argue ‘maliciously killed her’ to save money.
