One Good Turn . . .

by duncanr

a helping hand2a woman in Houston opened her house to a homeless man – giving him somewhere to stay

later, he repaid her kindness by pulling her and her two young grand-daughters to safety when an electrical fault set the house on fire while they were asleep –

hhmmm, I’d say that makes them just about even ?

A Samaritan in New York

by duncanr

it was bloody cold the other day – despite the central heating being on, I still had to don extra clothes in an attempt to keep warm

but I’m one of the lucky ones – some folk don’t have access to a home (never mind one equipped with central heating) or the luxury of extra layers of clothing to combat the cold, but must rely on the kindness of others

fortunately for those in that situation, there are a few good people around . . . like this good samaritan on the New York City subway who gave a shivering, homeless guy the shirt off his back

Sad State of the World

by duncanr

McDonalds-Clonmelno, not that anyone would choose to eat at McDonalds – though that is sad in its own way – but that anyone should think this act of human kindness is, in itself, newsworthy! –

after all, compassion and a willingness to help where help is needed should be the norm – it’s a sad reflection of how selfish and uncaring we have become that stories where one person helps another is regarded as an ‘amazing act of kindness’

Man Surprises Woman on Train

by duncanr

Don’t Judge a Book . . .

by duncanr

too often, we make snap judgements about a person based on their appearance – and that judgement affects how we subsequently interact (or not) with that person

in this vid, 4 homeless men in Los Angeles are given a free haircut – the intent being to show how little separates ‘us’ from ‘them’

[while I agree and applaud the vid makers intent, I rather think there’s a lot more than difference in personal grooming separating the ‘homeless’ from ‘us’ – the poor bastards have no home, no job, and no money]

The Impulse to do Good

by duncanr

in a ‘social experiment’ into human behaviour, an actor plays the part of a woman with 4 kids at home who finds at the checkout that she is unable to pay for her groceries

what will the other folk in the store do?

P.S. would be interesting to see whether folk are just as sympathetic and generous if the same ‘experiment’ was carried out at an up-market store where the customers are well-heeled or whether the kindness exhibited by folk in this video was dependent on the ability to empathise with the ‘victim’, i.e., been there, know what it’s like, etc
