Harry Leslie Smith

by duncanr

Harry is one of my heroes

92 yrs old, the bugger first came to my attention when he spoke at the UK Labour party Conference in 2014 in defence of the NHS

I have previously posted a video of that speech to the conference here –

even if you can’t be arsed to read the rest of this post, watch that vid – it’s a . . .

Labour MPs with Balls

by duncanr

up yours, Harman !

up yours, Harman !

memo to UK Labour Party MPs who followed acting leader’s instruction not to vote on the ruling Conservative Party’s planned welfare bill . . .

‘abstention’ is not ‘opposition’ – [except when it is a refusal to support one’s own party’s policies]

‘abstention’ is ‘acquiescence’

so praise from me to those 48 Labour MPs who defied their party and joined with the SNP to vote against the Tory plans

and shame on the 184 Labour MPs who tacitly supported tory cuts by abstaining – that will do little to persuade the thousands of traditional labour voters in Scotland who deserted the party, in part because of a widespread belief that labour had abandoned them and turned into a party of ‘red tories’, to return to the fold –

Miliband Eminem Mashup

by duncanr

the UK votes on Thursday to elect a new government

this is an opportunity to shape the future of the UK – to vote for the party whose policies you favour over the alternatives on offer

of course, if you live in England, I would prefer you vote for the Labour party – and if in Scotland, the SNP 😆

but regardless of your political allegiance, if you have a vote – then bloody use it, ‘cos folk died to get you the right to cast a vote !

Daily Mail Hate Campaign

by duncanr

BVeUb8OCIAAsTYnThe UK tabloid ‘newspaper’ –  I put inverted commas round the word newspaper deliberately – does not have the best of reputations for honest, fair-minded, balanced reporting of events

its idea of political debate was to recently publish an article smearing the reputation of the father of Ed Miliband, the current leader of the UK Labour party – branding him a traitor, someone who hated Britain and whose ‘vile’ left-wing views had passed down to his son

Having allowed an upset Miliband the ‘right of reply’ to challenge the besmirching of his father’s reputation, the Mail has refused to apologize for the original article and has repeated the same claim –

Those who know a little of history may, with justification, think that when a newspaper  founded by a man who . . .

Labour Plan to Lower Voting Age

by duncanr

votingLabour leader, Ed Miliband is proposing to extend the vote to 16 and 17 yr olds in UK elections – though this might not be the vote-winning ploy he hoped it might be

According to a poll in the Huffington Post, 60% of those who responded believe 16yr olds are too immature to be trusted with the vote –

Odd logic here, innit?

16yr olds in the UK can get married, have sex, become a parent

Which requires the greater maturity – raising a child or casting a vote ?

Not rocket science….

by NobblySan

It’s not often that I find myself agreeing with high-ranking religious ‘leaders’, but it’s one of those days today.

A bunch of C of E bishops (what is the collective noun for bishops?…. a ‘bashing’, perhaps?) have rounded firmly on the government for their ‘morally corrupt’ attitude to the state of the country’s finances.

Good on ’em I say, but they’re only saying what most people already know.

Go, Bish, go….
