Obama left me Up a Tree

There are reports that Fatah and Hamas, the rival Palestinian organisations, have reached an accord and are about to sign a reconciliation agreement leading to an interim government and setting a date for a general election.

Whether this move will ultimately help in finding a peaceful solution to the Israeli/Palestinian problem is debatable.

Mubarak to Quit Tonight ?

Based on the responsibility of the armed forces and its commitment to protect the people and its keenness to protect the nation… and in support of the legitimate demands of the people [the army] will continue meeting on a continuous basis to examine measures to be taken to protect the nation and its gains and the ambitions of the great Egyptian people,

Bye, bye

The Supreme Council of Egyptian Armed Forces convened a meeting today to which – notwithstanding his position as titular head of the armed forces – President (for now) Mubarak was excluded.

That, and the statement issued later (see above)- to a rapturous reception from the pro-democracy protestors – is a clear indication that Mubarak is no longer making the decisions that matter in Egypt.

In effect, Egypt now has a -as yet unofficial – military government.

Expect Mubarak to decamp soon (possibly tonight ?) to a clinic abroad (Germany) for treatment of health issues !!!
