Harry Leslie Smith has died, aged 95, of pneumonia while visiting his son in Canada –

a passionate defender of the NHS (National Health Service) in the UK – this speech he delivered to the Labour Party Conference in 2016 is one the most powerful, and moving I’ve ever heard . . .

it is common for opposing parties to scrutinize each other’s promises, ready to attack if those promises have not been properly costed

osborne has a planparties are generally careful then to specify how they propose to raise the money to fund their promises,e.g., a new tax, an increase in an existing tax, making savings by cutting expenditure on certain services

Much Ado About Nothing

I took a friend out for a meal on Saturday

when we arrived at my favourite chinese buffet restaurant, I found it had changed hands and was now a steak-house – not much cop for a vegetarian !

I should have taken that as an omen of things to come and just cancelled the evening but I foolishly suggested we try my 2nd best chinese buffet restaurant. My friend agreed, so off we went

the meal was not great – there being less vegetarian dishes on offer at No 2 restaurant – but it was O.K.

N.I.C.E to recommend C-Sections for All

N.I.C.E. (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) is reportedly about to recommend that all women in the U.K. should be able to have their babies delivered by C-section on the NHS if they request it – regardless of whether or not there is any medical need for a caesarian

Treating Cancer : A Question of Priorities

a. The UK has one of the poorest cancer survival rates in Europe
b. Early detection of cancer improves survival rates

In an attempt to improve survival rates by detecting cancer at an earlier stage, the Government promised to set aside £750 million to enable GPs (family doctors) to send patients directly for tests when cancer was suspected rather than refer them to a Consultant who would then make the decision whether tests were appropriate.
