Love this Idea

by duncanr

The City of Los Angeles recently honored former President Barack Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown L.A. in his honor.

A petition has now been raised requesting New York City Council rename the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets – “President Barack H. Obama Avenue”

as of writing this post, the petition has received 381,995 382,337 signatures

Royal Refurbishment

by duncanr

royalty-in-needan elderly couple, living on benefits, desperately needing some repairs and refurbishment to their rent-free living accommodation costing an estimated £369 million are seeking financial assistance from the public

some hard-hearted bastards less than charitable souls, however – unsympathetic to the couples plight – are seeking to make them pay for the repairs and decoration themselves –

Take Us With You, Scotland

by duncanr

_82996782_takeuswithyoumapHhhmmm, seems a lot of folk in the north of England think they have more in common with their Scottish neighbours than they do with their new political masters in London

an online petition requesting that the north of England be allowed to secede from the UK and join with Scotland – the border between Scotland and England being redrawn much further south than at present – has garnered around 20k signatures in the last couple of days; while the hashtag TakeUsWithYouScotland is currently trending on twitter – where the reaction of Scots to the proposal has been warm and welcoming

[now if only they’d redraw that border just a bit further to the south, to include Birmingham !] 😆

Maggie, Maggie, Maggie . . .

by duncanr

thatcherMargaret Thatcher was either loved or loathed

A group of conservative MPs (who clearly belong in the former category) are trying to push a private members bill through parliament to have the August Bank Holiday Monday in the UK renamed ‘Margaret Thatcher Day’

As one of thousands who took to the streets chanting ‘Maggie, Maggie, Maggie – Out, Out, Out!‘ when she was in power, it will be no surprise that I am against naming a national holiday after someone who caused great divisions in the country.

And it seems I am not alone here – thousands have already signed an online petition opposing the proposal to rename the August Bank Holiday ‘Margaret Thatcher Day’

Piers Morgan vs Alex Jones

Piers invited Alex in to the studio to debate the issue – here’s the result !

Petition to Deport Piers from USA

by duncanr

piers morgan uncle samI’m not a great fan of Piers Morgan as a person or his interview style but . . .

here he is “interviewing” Larry Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America who believes the way to prevent more shooting atrocities is to arm more people

Following this interview, gun supporters have launched a petition to have Piers Morgan deported from the USA on the grounds that he “is engaged in a hostile attack against the US Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment.”

Hhmm, seems like the First Amendment right to Free Speech applies only to US citizens and not to anyone else living or working in the USA ?

Communications Capabilities Development Programme

by duncanr

government spyingIn February 2012, the coalition government – [in the UK]- announced plans to require communications service providers (everyone from ISPs to social networks) to intercept and collect everybody’s communications data just in case it’s needed later in an investigation. Called by its new name, the Communications Capabilities Development Programme, this initiative was announced in the Queen’s Speech in May 2012 and will likely be introduced to parliament as the Communications Data Bill.”

In forming the coalition government in 2010, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats promised . . .
