Je Suis Steve

up yours, Jimmy !

up yours, Jimmy !

oh dear, seems a lot of my compatriots (and some non-Scots too) are up in arms about a Steve Bell cartoon published in the Guardian newspaper – claiming it is racist – http://tinyurl.com/pjqvg3u

well, some might certainly see it as offensive and I (as a Scot masel) can see why they may think so, but is it worth getting one’s knickers in a twist ?

I didn’t comment on the murder of Charlie Hebdo cartoonists and staff because . . .

I’m Not a Racist but . . .

by duncanr

a UKIP councillor claims “there’s absolutely no way I’m a racist” because she knows some Asian shopkeepers but then confesses she has a ‘problem’ with ‘negroes’

Rozanne Duncan has since been expelled from UKIP because of her views but continues to deny she is a racist – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-31565770

is she right to do so?

she does not . . .

Dewani Detective charged with Fraud

by duncanr

Colonel Christiaan Theron

Colonel Christiaan Theron, the detective who led the initial investigation into the death of Anni Dewani has been charged with fraud and racism.

The white officer is accused of calling a black subordinate a ‘black baboon’ and then trying to bribe him with the offer of a car to drop the accusation against him.

Full details here – http://tinyurl.com/5vauwlr

While this incident is not directly connected to the Dewani murder enquiry, no doubt Shrien Dewani’s lawyers will seek to exploit this incident to strengthen their argument that the case against their client is built on racism and fraud ?

Hardeep Singh on Race

by duncanr

Hardeep whaur's yur troosers

Hardeep Singh is a Sikh born in Glasgow. He is Scottish and proud of it. And as Scotland is still a part of the UK, he is British too. But how do other people see him?

If you’ve got 25 min to spare, it’s worth taking the time to watch his video documentary exploring what it means to be British today. Is it enough to be born here? Does that make one ‘British’? Or do you need to have a white skin and be born here to be accepted as ‘British’ by some folk?

Youtube won’t let me embed his vid here but if you click on the link you can watch it on Youtube (you’ll have to watch a couple of ads first before the doc starts properly)

Racism at the BBC…live text commentary.

by NobblySan

I’ve been following the (mixed) fortunes of young Mr Murray in his Rich Bastards Jolly Outing Cup (sorry…’Shanghai Masters’) match against that nice Mr Federer.

I know this isn’t exactly news, but it really does get my goat….

If the wild-haired Scotsman wins, he’s British; if he loses, throws a tantrum, or kicks his bat across the pitch, he’s Scottish.

See what I mean:-

Murray 4-6 1-0 Federer
Murray cranks the pressure up on the Swiss from the “S” of the Second Set – sorry, what I mean is he’s not messing about here. It’s his turn to draw out the errors and Federer obliges, scooping his forehand wide at 0-40. The Swiss plops another forehand beyond the baseline to hand his British rival an easy break.

Quickly followed by:-

Murray slams away a ball as Federer conjures another super shot to take advantage – and a fourth break point of the game. A double fault from the world number four sees Federer get back on serve. The Scot kicks away another ball and complains to the umpire about the crowd.

Don’t you just know that it’s some Welsh git doing the commentary….
