Abduction as Romance

by duncanr

We might not realize how much of our pop culture stories involve taking women against their will. It’s often dressed up as romance. It’s an “old, a deeply troubling media convention.” It’s an outgrowth of the idea that women are passive participants in relationships, and the best ones are too virtuous to seek out sex, but men know best who belongs with who. – misscellania

How about you?

And if later you’re hungry
And fancy a bite . . .

Separated but Together in Death

by duncanr

happy valentineO.K. I guess I don’t need to remind anyone it’s Valentine’s Day – my local Tesco (and other stores too, probably) has a highly visible display of cards, chocolates, and bottles of sparkling wine right as you enter the store, and has done for the last couple of weeks, thereby robbing guys of the excuse that they didn’t know, when confronted by a partner pissed off at the lack of a card or pressie on awakening this morning

I daresay I might have something to say about the commercialism of Valentine’s Day later on but since I’m in a mellow mood at the moment, I’ll mark the occasion by telling you a fitting story

A man and a woman fell in love but . . .

Don’t Buy Yellow Roses

by duncanr

yellow roseA word to the wise guys

It’s valentine’s Day on the 14th and your woman will be expecting (at the very least) some flowers. Roses are the traditional flower associated with this occasion but be careful about the colour!

According to the Victorian ‘language of flowers’ (the Floral Code) a deep red rose signifies “bashful shame” – which is not perhaps the message you want to convey to the lady, but it is at least better than giving her a peachy coloured rose, which means “sympathy”

Of course chances are your woman won’t know the Floral Code but in case she does, FFS don’t give her a bluidy yellow rose – the friggin thing says you just want to be friends 🙄

Tough Love

by duncanr

knife through heart

Feb 14 (aka Valentine’s Day) will soon be upon us and some anxious teenagers will be sending themselves a Valentine’s card in case no-one else does – to avoid the humiliation of being the only one in their group who doesn’t receive a card from a secret admirer!

Valentine’s Day is not just a fraught occasion for young people, however. Adults, too, approach it with mixed feelings. It is generally accepted, that if you are in a relationship, then this day you will, if you are a man, show some romantic feeling towards your partner – treat her to an expensive meal perhaps?

When you meet her, greet her with flowers ?

Chocolates, and jewelry will also be well received !

Turning up with a loaded .40 caliber handgun, a stun baton, a machete, a variety of knives, a baseball bat, and brass knuckles, on the other hand . . .

Why was it you? (Part I)

by UniSciKill

“I’m not the sort of person

Who falls

In and quickly out of love

But to you I gave my affection

Right from the start”

The details have become hazy over the years, but I remember when we first met. It was during my sophomore year in high school. First day of classes. Standing in the hallway dressed in blue jeans and a dark blue jacket, I was staring at the carpeted ground with my back resting against the wall. Occasionally I would lift my head to see if my computer programming teacher had arrived yet.  He had not and I continued waiting. Where were my classmates? I don’t remember anyone waiting with me. Were they inside, and if so why was I outside? Like I said, the details are hazy.

Speed Weed dating

by duncanr

Interested in a bit of cross-pollination ?

Plant this seed in your mind and let it germinate – weed dating

It’s a bit like speed dating, only couples spend 3 minutes together identifying weeds from flowers – discarding the former and nurturing the latter in the hope that if bedded in a suitable location a budding relationship will flower.

Of course, pairing a couple together in a garden is not a new idea. It’s been tried before – and we all know how that turned out !
