St George’s day

by NobblySan

I’m not patriotic.

I liken patriotism to religious belief – an indoctrinated, dogmatic view of something that is instilled into the gullible by the manipulative, with a view to masking the reality of a given situation.

This is not to say that I don’t like living here in  Britain, or that there aren’t things about Britain, England or Scotland (that just about covers my ancestry) that I love enormously – I just can’t get my head around the idea of feeling ‘proud’ of stuff that I wasn’t involved in, and had no influence over.

All this leaves me not particularly keen to go waving a flag about or having a sticker in my car. I reckon that there’s only the finest of lines between patriotism and nationalism, and we all know where that leads.

Excellent bit of graffiti, snapped by No1 son in Italy.

Over the past few years, both the national flag of England and the Union Jack have been hijacked and claimed by a variety of odious far right groups, who claim to represent the indigenous (whatever the hell that means in Britain!) population of these islands.

The sight of shaven headed knuckle-draggers standing around an English flag whilst giving the nazi salute has left me feeling rather despondent.

However, I am somewhat heartened to see that there now appears to be some form of groundswell opinion and movement going on to take back control of  St.George’s day, and the English and Union flags from the likes of the BNP and their loathsome far right chums.
