Lest We Forget

by duncanr

poppytoday sees the yearly tribute and remembrance of those who gave their lives in war

as usual, I shall watch the ceremony from the Cenotaph in London at home on TV and as usual as soon as the pipes start to play the tears will start to fall

this year, the approach to the ceremony has been blighted by arguments over the . . .

Bravery Under Fire

by duncanr

a frightened young girl is caught in the open when gunfire breaks out – and shelters behind a wrecked car

a young boy comes under sniper fire as he tries to reach her

he feigns death then scrambles to his feet when the gunfire stops

the girl (his sister?) is reluctant to leave the protection of the car – but, holding her hand, he persuades her to make a run for the safety of a nearby building

[and we worry about the danger of letting our kids go to school on their own !]

How NOT to Treat your Friends

by duncanr

Iraqis and Afghanis who worked as translators for the US and Allied forces risked their own and their family’s lives by doing so

one would think a debt of gratitude was owing them then and a moral obligation exist to ensure their safety when the troops withdraw from their country

judge for yourself whether that is the case

I’d like to think translators who worked for the UK forces were treated a bit better than those who worked for the americans – but I am not confident in assuming so !

Gaza Grief and Anger

by duncanr

Following Israeli shelling of UN schools in Gaza and the death of Palestinian refugees – including children – sheltering there, a reporter breaks down in tears while trying to report on the event

then there is this footage of Israeli shells hitting a market, resulting in injuries and death to more Palestinians, and a photo-journalist

does Israel really think that it can beat Hamas militarily and . . .

Assault on Gaza

by duncanr

Question any action of the Israeli Government and one will almost certainly be accused of anti-semitism by its defenders – a convenient way to avoid answering any awkward questions

and if a critic can’t be dismissed as anti-semitic, because he or she is themselves a Jew, then they are accused of being a ‘self-hater’

watch what happens when Jon Stewart, an american broadcaster, and himself a Jew, broadcast this piece on the Israeli assault on the residents of Gaza

that piece caused a rabid right-winger to launch a hysterical . . .

Memorial Day

by duncanr

It’s a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK, and also a long holiday weekend in the US, where they are ‘celebrating’ Memorial Day today – a time for folk to remember those who have died serving their country, and for some few, to remember the lives of those taken
